These earrings are made of slices of tagua which is an organic material from the Amazon rainforest.  Tagua is sustainably harvested in Ecuador where tagua palms grow naturally in the swampy parts of the rainforest.  Tagua is becoming an important local resource. Harvesting tagua doesn’t harm the rainforest and can act as a preservative. When what grows naturally provides a source of income to local people, it to help prevent the rainforest from being cut down for farming or forestry purposes.
