Eco-friendly materials | Warm and naturally elegant | Handmade and fair trade
This naturally elegant beaded necklace drapes across in a large bib fashion, a little like the beaded breastplates of ancient Incan princesses. You will feel strong and victorious wearing this eco-friendly piece from the Amazon Jungle. Wear this necklace with a brightly colored dress or blouse with a wide neckline. The strong character of the necklace can look either casual or more dressy. The white beads are made from acai seeds and retain a portion of their natural color, with brown striations and swirls. The acai beads are lightly complimented with small glass beads that hang in in 5 rows, each row getting steadily longer.
Artisans in the Andes uses fair trade methods in all its purchases from local indigenous artisans. This necklace was created by Olga, an artisan in Otavello with a small business. Artisans in the Andes paid for the necklace in advance so that Olga would not be out of pocket for the supplies used in the necklace. Fair trade is very important to young, female artisans like Olga as it allows her to continue to pursue her craft in the home with her young children rather than go to work in a factory.
The beads in this necklace are from the acai palm which grows in swampy areas of the Amazon rainforest. Acai palms grow naturally as an integrated part of the forest. Local people harvest the seeds from acai palms, which doesn’t hurt the trees. The palms themselves continue to provide the seeds for up to 40 years. This kind of sustainable harvesting in the jungle provides locals with a sustainable income and helps to prevent clear cutting the Amazon for farming or other purposes.
