This necklace is made with thin slices of tagua nut, a very hard organic nut from the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. The nuts are sustainably harvested, hand cut and hand dyed with organic Italian dyes. Each bead retains the faint swirls and patterns created from the way that the nuts grow. Tagua is very strong but very light, much like ivory. Tagua palm trees grow as a natural part of the Amazon rainforest. They provide an important local resource to the indigenous people who harvest them. With the purchase of this necklace you become part of the sustainable use of natural resources from the rainforest and help to prevent cutting down the rainforest for other purposes such as farming or mining.
Although this necklace looks substantial, it will be light and easy around your neck. The beads are 1.25 inches by 1.5 inches (3 cm by 4 cm). In total, the length of the necklace is 40 inches long (100 cm) with 14 inch (35 cm) long leather ties to each side of the beads. The rich dark brown leather strips are half an inch wide (1 cm) and will hold the necklace firmly in place. You can tie the leather straps at the length that most compliments your neckline.
All of the necklaces on Artisans in the Andes were made in Ecuador by local women. Artisans in the Andes used fair trade methods to purchase them including paying in advance and paying a fair market rate to provide the artisans a profit over the cost of the goods.
