Handcarved | Bold | Fair trade
Display your bravery and strength with this gorgeous Indian head pendant. This pendant has been handcarved by a master carver in southern Ecuador. The pendant is made from tagua, often call vegetable ivory, sustainably harvested from the Amazon Rainforest. Tagua is harvested, dried in the sun and cut into shape. After drying, tagua becomes very white and hard, like elephant ivory. The carver dyes the pendant inky black, then carves into the white nut.
We work with the carver on a fair trade basis including paying in advance so that the carver is not out of pocket for materials, and ensuring that the price paid to the carver covers both the materials and his time. Fair trade helps indigenous artisans to develop and maintain a sustainable livelihood as they continue and pass along their craft.
The pendant is black, about 1.3 inches across (3.5cm), the carver cuts through the outer black layer into the white of the nut so that the Indian head shines through. The cord is 27 (70cm) around with a slip knot for easy on and off.
