This mens sun pendant has been carved by hand by a master tagua carver. Robolini lives in the south of Ecuador and works with his family in his home, carving tagua pendants and pipes. We work with Robolini on a fair trade basis, including paying upfront for his work so that he is not out of pocket for supplies.
Tagua is a nut that grows on tagua palms in the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador. The nuts are sustainably harvested from the palm trees allowing the palms to grow a new batch of nuts every quarter over their 40 year life span. Tagua nuts are large and very hard. They are dried in the sun and then cut to the shape of the pendant. Tagua is sometimes called vegetable ivory as its very similar in its characteristics to elephant ivory. It’s very hard, light and durable and can be carved just like ivory.
